Obsolete Sounds

 

     On the radio the other day, I heard the host talking about sounds our children will never hear or remember hearing.  Here is a list of some of them-

1.  Rotary telephone-    Remember when it took about 20 seconds to dial a number.

2.  Busy signal-     After you dialed the number, you would get a busy signal if someone was on the other line.  You couldn't just leave a message.

3.  The operator saying, "You have a collect call from .............   Do you want to accept the charges?     When I was traveling without my parents, I would always make a collect calls home.

4.  TV channel selector-     You would get up to change the channel to view one of the 4 stations offered.  Each TV had a certain sound the dial would make while turning it.

5.  Coffee percolator-     You always knew your parents were having a dinner party when you heard the coffee percolating.

6.  Gas station driveway bell-     I barely remember this, but when my parents would pull up to a gas station, the car would drive over a hose that would make a "ding, ding" sound in the building.  The attendant would come out and pump the gas, clean your windows, check you oil and take your money or credit card.  There were no stores in gas stations.

7.  Film projector-   Remember the sound the school film projector would make.  The voice on the film, along with the noise from the projector, would always make you sleepy.
